“Dick” Richard Paul Cervenka Sr. of Georgetown passed away at home Wednesday morning, November 12, 2008 at the age of 94.

Services were held Monday, November 17, 2008 at 10 a.m. at Main Street Baptist Church, with a burial service following at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Georgetown.

Richard Paul Cervenka Sr. was born June 29, 1914 on a farm near Granger. to Frank and Rose Machu Cervenka. He was the youngest of 11 children, six brothers and four sisters. He grew up in Granger and attended Moravia School on the Cervenka farm. Mr. Cervenka later graduated from Granger High School, where he received a football scholarship to North Texas Agriculture College at Arlington. Dick graduated from Central Texas Commercial College. After college, he returned to his hometown and was hired by the Williamson County Clerk, where he rose to the position of chief clerk.

When World War II broke out, Dick joined the Navy and served until the end of the war. While serving, he married Effie Shivers on December 19, 1941. Following the war, Dick and Effie returned to Georgetown. Dick resumed his job at the County Clerk’s office. He ran for County Clerk, was elected, and served in the position for 40 years.

Dick was a conscientious civic leader in the community, working in various capacities in numerous organizations. He received the Outstanding Citizen Award and was a member of the Texas District and County Clerks Association. Other memberships included the Board of Directors and past president of Georgetown Lions Club, member and past president of Georgetown Welfare Association, member of the Williamson County Livestock Association, American Legion Post 282, member and past president of Georgetown Country Club, member of Georgetown Citizens Advisory Committee and Georgetown Chamber of Commerce, past president of Georgetown Girl Scout Neighborhood Association, past drive chairman and member of Georgetown United Fund, past secretary and member of the Baptist Church for 62 years, where he served as Deacon.

He was preceded in death by Effie, his wife of 66 years.

Survivors include his daughter Linda and husband Fred Homeyer; son, Richard Paul Cervenka Jr. and wife Cheryl; three grandchildren, Dakota Cervenka, Casey Cervenka and Kelly Homeyer; a sister, Minnie Helble; and numerous nieces and nephews.
